What is Big Data?

Big Data is a term that refers to large data sets that are characterized by variability and diversity. The more data you can collect, the easier it will be to reach new customers and prepare appropriate actions for them.

In order to manage Big Data, it is necessary to have an appropriate infrastructure with high computing power. Until recently, the company had to develop its own platforms to store the necessary information and files. Now, cloud-based solutions are very popular. It is a convenient and much cheaper solution. In 2020, entrepreneurs will have a whole range of possibilities ideally suited to Big Data. For the first time, such solutions are also available to smaller entrepreneurs.

The popularity of Big Data in Poland

In Poland, 8% of companies were using Big Data solutions in 2018.The European average was 12%, and the ranking was headed by countries such as the Netherlands (22%), Finland (19%) and Ireland (20%). According to Eurostat data, large Polish companies eagerly use Big Data.

The report takes into account that Polish companies most often use geolocation data. In this way, you can track the operation of vehicles as well as various devices. Such data is most often used by transport companies and warehouses. According to the report, municipal companies are also willing to use geolocation. IT, telecommunications and commercial companies are located a bit further. 

Data from sensors and smart sensors are used in the utilities sectors as well as in ICT. Social media, which are a real mine of information, play a significant role in Big Data. In the European Union, 13% of enterprises use this type of data, and we can distinguish ICT sectors as well as sectors offering various accommodation. Although the use of Big Data in Poland is lower than in Europe, a growing trend in the use of individual data can be observed.

Big Data and small and medium-sized enterprises 

Small and medium-sized enterprises usually do not have the appropriate knowledge to create an appropriate Big Data infrastructure, therefore the implementation of certain solutions is extremely difficult. The costs of employing competent people are not the cheapest, which is an additional difficulty. However, digitization of processes brings many advantages and their introduction can significantly increase profits and the possibility of appearing in completely new areas.
